It's inevitable that we will own a dog someday. But for now....
it's GUINEA PIGS! Who woulda thought?

We weren't sure Everett's diapers were giving our home enough of the perma-poo smell we were looking for, so we thought we'd go for a full-blown Pet Store aroma instead. It's been lovely.
It's not that Tom and I dislike dogs. We're just too lazy to take care of one right now. I once told a begging Reese that we could get one when she turned 7. It was just a random age that seemed far enough in the future, and luckily she just accepted that without much thought or fight. Then about a year and a half ago we decided to be nice and help fill the dog void with a fish. Well, that fish died. It was 5 more fish/"plan of salvation" discussions later when we finally realized that (even with the perfect care we swore we were giving) fish just weren't our thing.
So about a month ago we decided to try our hand at guinea pigs. We couldn't kill those.....could we?! We got them off craigslist from a cute little family whose 10 & 11 year old boys outgrew them. I gave the girls the option to change their names, but after Claire's one suggestion of "Camera", we stuck with Bruce and Dobbie (which I quite liked anyway). They even have their own theme song. I totally thought I made it up then one day realized that it's pretty much the tune of "Ruby & Max". Mine is obviously much more awesome though.
It's taken a while, but Bruce and Dobbie are slowly warming up to the kids.
Reese, the self-proclaimed dog whisperer: "They're getting used to me! It's like I'm a Guinea Pig Whisperer!!"
Yes, Bruce and Dobbie, you really kind of stink. But my kids absolutely love you and you are doing a fabulous job fulfilling your dog-delaying responsibilities. So you're going to have to endure a little more Elmyra-like torture.

Is it just me, or are those guinea pigs INSANELY huge?!?!
I am sure your girls are content for maybe another year maybe when Reese is 8 right?! Well they look like fun!
Ha ha! They kind of do look extra huge in these pictures for some reason. They are decent size, but it must be the camera angle or something.
Or you could be mean parents like us and say "When the cat dies that is it, no more pets." Sophie is desperate for a dog, I told her she has the wrong parents. I have no intention, even if I eventually live in a house with a yard, of being saddled with a dog to take care of. I grew up with dogs and I know the effort involved. I don't want to come home in the middle of the day to let it out, deal with it's barking, clean up it's poop, or train it. I told Sophie when she is 18 or 19 and moves out she can get a deaf service dog and they will have to allow it anywhere she lives.
Pinney Gigs are the best. We have Daisy and even though Lulu has outgrown her Dave and I are very much in love with her ... so we cant get rid of her. I love all the pics of the kids cuddling them.
Oh you are a good mom. They are way too close to the mouse/rat family for me. :) The things we do for our kids! Glad the girls are happy though!
Love the pics! Your post inspired me to google search "clipping guinea pig nails." I found a few instructional YouTube videos and posts on eHow/about.com/etc., but nothing enough official enough to forward to you. :)
It was so fun to see you guys last week! Hope all is well in CO.
So that's what they look like! Cuties. My kids love those furry creatures at other people's houses, but I remember the pet-store smell all too well from my own childhood. Here's hoping we can avoid pets until they're 15 :o).
Looks like the kids are in love!! We have had both (our guinea pig Maggie just died last year but lived a good long 7 years with us!!) and we still have our dog. I have to say that our dog seems to be easier than our guinea pig was to manage and take care of. Maybe these guinea pigs will be good preparation for the doggie years ahead!!
Once, when Clayton was little we got a Guinnea Pig. Her name was Frankie and shortly after getting her she gave birth to two more Guinnea Pigs. She didn't last long after that. I couldn't handle it. I think Disco is easier than Frankie was.
This post made me laugh. Stuck in a Barbie car, perma poo smell. You're funny.
Rachel, this post was hilarious. Funny because I'd get another dog 100x over getting a rodent! But I do think you either need a dog before you start having kids or after you are done because when you are cleaning up other people's poop and pee you can't deal with training a dog. You are welcome to borrow our dog any time, I'll ship her out to you ;)
What a fun mom you are. :) I am also delaying a dog...and I keep killing fish. :)
That totally makes me laugh. I just can't see guinea pigs in your household. You are such a great mom to take it for the team and deal with that wonderful smell:)
Hooray for piggies! We loved having a pig, but I much prefer the dog now that the kids are older! Looks like your girls LOVE them, so sweet! They are so much fun! Drew still tears up when we talk about his first pig, Oscar. Good memories!!
Yeah I think I'd agree.... I'm much rather own a dog before a rodent. But I'm glad its working out for you guys. Luckily my husband has allergies to most animals so I just use him as the answer. The only problem is he really wants a dog someday too. Living in CA has saved me. No decent yard for a poor dog. Maybe one day.
Cute little critters. I would love to see Reese in action as the guinea pig whisperer.
