AKA- The Thanksgiving when the kids were sliding and biffing it all over the turkey-grease-coated floors and Tom and I almost caught on fire.
Yes, it was a lovely Thanksgiving. Tom and I had decided that we wanted to do Thanksgiving with just our own little family this year. You know, keep it simple.
"Simple"=
My brain: A pie or 2. Oooo, maybe from Marie Calendar's!
Tom's brain: 5 homemade pies.
My brain: a small turkey...enough to give us leftovers for a couple days.
Tom's brain: a 20 lb turkey....this will simplify our meals for the entire next week!
My brain: a few sides and gravy made from a packet.
Tom's brain: a few sides and a homemade gravy with "a flavor base of onions, carrots, and giblets."
As you can see, we're still working out the kinks in how we want to do the holidays. This was Tom's simplified version compared to how he did it 3 years ago. Tom just loves Thanksgiving and all the cooking. And I hate all the hours spent in the kitchen. Especially when it's just for 4 people. I guess you could call me a bit of a Thanksgiving bah-humbug-er. But since Tom is the resident chef in the house, he won out.
Even with all the kitchen time, there was still plenty of fun to be had. The girls were pretty excited that they got to help "stuff the turkey's bum".

Rocking out with "The Rockettes"

Everything was going swimmingly until it was time to take out the turkey. Now realizing that a foil pan was not the smartest idea in the world, Tom and I tried to pull it out together. It basically collapsed in, spilling gobs of the turkey juice/grease into the oven. Grease+hot oven=fire. Like as in we had a bonfire spewing out of the oven that we had to run away from! I was screaming, the smoke detector was going off, children were bawling. I'm still shocked that my hair didn't catch on fire. I believe this was our first Thanksgiving dinner prayer where we had to thank Heavenly Father for our safety during the meal preparations. Some grease ended up on the floor too and seemed to spread everywhere. Even after wiping it up, the girls spent the rest of the afternoon slipping and getting hurt.

we should have joined forces! it was just our family & Jesse's dad. All that cooking seemed like a waste when it's all over in 30 min. or less.
But... you day seems much more entertaining. hope your kitchen's ok!
Glad you survived the oven fire! Loved all the pictures of the kids.
I have done that a few times with those stupid alfoil trays!
Your Thanksgiving and our Christmas will be very similar. My low key is going out to lunch Dave's low key is to get me to replicate all his Mum's christmas cooking :-)
Okay... I literally just laughed out loud visualizing that turkey spilling story!! Your mom was at my parent's house today and I was just telling her how your kids couldn't be any cuter!
Oh my goodness, that sounds so traumatic and I feel for you, but I almost snorted water out of my nose when I read your line about the prayer! Good job having a positive perspective about it (the week in between probably helps). What a memorable holiday. Heh. Adorable kids, especially the girls dancing in their matching jammies. Everett is getting so big, and seems like such a long-suffering little guy. So cute.
Holy cow--I am sitting here laughing out loud. You described it perfectly and I could envision all of it going down. Obviously TOTALLY freaky...but I bet will make for the most amazing story to be retold and laughed about for the rest of your Thanksgivings. Classic! Your kiddos are just too cute and getting so big!
What - no picture of the oven on fire? Or your hair on fire? It's a good thing we have blogs so that when disaster strikes we can think, "Well at least this will make a good blog story!" And what's up with Tom's simple T-Day? Too funny. I'm totally with you. If I were doing my own cooking for T-Day I wouldn't even make a turkey - I don't eat more than about 2 oz (including leftovers). Glad you found the gratitude in all that craziness.
That sounds like a crazy turkey day!! I love the sub-title. :) What are your Christmas plans?
That happened to me with a turkey in a foil pan once, too!! So glad you were safe. Thanks so much for your comment on my blog. It meant a lot. :)
