Our Heroes

I was out and about with Reese this morning and I decided to stop and get my car washed. I was using the vacuums and at one point took Reese out of her car seat so I could vacuum it out as well. Of course the curious little monkey that she is had to climb up into the front seat and push all possible buttons. One of those buttons apparently included the automatic lock button. I heard a click, but didn't think much of it. When I was done I put Reese back in her car seat, shut the door and went around to the driver's side so we could take off. But much to my horror the door was locked and so were all the others. So Reese was stuck in the car along with my keys and phone. From a previous experience with my friend Dadra and her daughter, I knew the police would come out for free when a child was involved and unlock it and that they would also get there super quick...faster than Tom could. So I called 9-11 from the carwash's office and was expecting one policeman to show up and help me out just like they did with Dadra. Reese was so cute while we waited and had no clue anything was wrong. I just played peek-a-boo with her and made silly faces and she just had the best time...although onlookers probably thought I was a crazy person bouncing all around my car making faces at it. After only about 5 minutes, not only did a policeman show up, but also a firetruck, a separate fireman, and an ambulance!!! The firetruck even had its siren blaring up until it reached us. I was so embarrassed! But it was kind of cute thinking that all this was for this one little person who as far as she was concerned was just playing a fun game of peek-a-boo with her mommy. (Apparently my community doesn't have too much going on, although it was comforting to see how seriously they take a child being locked in a car.) After they unlocked the car I was already feeling like a fool so I decided I wasn't losing any more pride by asking them for a picture with Reese. I knew I'd kick myself later if I didn't.

I am so glad you got the picture with the men.

My friend did that in St. George in the middle of summer when it was 110 outside. Scary!!!

Glad everything worked out.

I love it! You've got guts to ask for a picture and what a funny story! I'm crossing my fingers...that's one experience we haven't had yet.

I love the pictures, she will probably always like a man in uniform! Way to save the day!

I'm so impressed you got the photos. These are the stories great blog posts are made of.

Once when the girls were about Reese's age and Steve was in Iraq they locked themselves in their bedroom and I could not get the door unlocked so I had to call housing maintenance. Not quite as exciting as an ambulance, though:)

That is so funny! That's hilarious that you got the whole emergency vehicle caravan. I would be SO embarrassed too. Good for you for swallowing what little pride you had left and asking for a picture. :)

that has been my biggest fear! I have always thought what I would do. Break the window? Now I know i can call the fire department!! Glad Reese was unaware of what was going on!!

I never knew about calling the police. I too have often wondered what I would do in a situation like that. Good to know the solution.

First of all, those pictures are adorable. Second, was it hot outside? I am trying to determine what exactly the ambluance was for, I can understand the roles everyone else would have. Good to know that they were fast and efficient!

Stephanie, it wasn't too bad because the car was thankfully parked under the shade. But too long in there could definitely be bad. The ambulance guys came up to her after I pulled her out of the car to make sure she was alright. So I guess that was their role. Luckily she was only in there for a total of 10 maybe 15 minutes.

I'm also glad you got a picture. That's so nice that they send all those people to help. I guess they have to plan for any type of situation when a kid gets locked in a car. Rebecca likes to lock me out of our house. She's done it to me twice when I've been standing outside talking to someone in my front yard.

Yeah! So glad it wasn't here and in 100+ weather. I accidentally locked Clara in the car once and it had me freaked out from that point on. Thank goodness you can call on those heroes and they'll come running! What a fun picture to have to go along with this story.

That is so funny. I am sure you were scared when you realized what had happened... and good thing the weather was not too hot. I love it that you got a picture of Reese with her heroes. Too cute! So, do you jsut keep your camera in your purse or what??

Chris gets calls all the time to go unlock car doors. In the summer months they break a lot of windows because it is so hot in Vegas and they don't want the kids to get too hot. I don't think I would have been as calm as you were- I am the type that freaks out and then freaks Riley out!!! Glad everyone is okay!!

Glad to see the picture a little larger. How cute! She's really giving you quite the adventures. That's my girl!

For all of you Mom's out there, I found out that POP-A-LOCK will come out immediately and for free, also. Amy and I did that when Clara was locked in the car in my driveway. They came really fast. We didn't think of 911. Looks like that was a lot more fun.

Too funny! As I was read this I had a mental picture of you bouncing around your car! What a great story! What a relief that it wasnt here in Vegas in a 100+ degree weather. Im glad that it all turned out okay.

Nora, carrying my camera around does sound like something I would do, but no. The pictures were just with my camera phone.

This is such a great story to share with Reese later. I think it's awesome that you got a PICTURE! It would of been scary if it was HOT outside.

Rach--that is way too funny!!! Where was the nice little man who just came by himself???? I so would've just thought the same thing would happen like when you guys were here. That is just too hilarious that you got a whole entire emergency crew. I also love your description of how oblivious reese was as you were just playing peek a boo with her. I love that picture with all the guys--there really was quite a party there!

Oh...and I'm just impressed that you were vacuuming your car out :-)....that's quite the rarity around these parts!

That one is a keeper! You were smart taking pictures of it! Those will be fun later on down the line for a good story!

What a great picture! I'm glad everything worked out. It's nice to know the cops are so helpful for future reference.

I love that you took pictures! I am sure Reese will love to hear this story when she gets older!

Oh holy crap, that picture with Reese and all the firefighters is hilarious. I love it.

Don't feel too bad--my friend was a nanny and did this once, in Vegas in July, and the firemen came and had to break the window in her car. That's WAY more embarrassing. And expensive.

What a good mom you are to have been able to keep her from freaking out.

Hey that's a pretty good camera phone! Glad it turned out okay. Don't be embarrassed - I'm pretty sure the dispatcher just said "You guys ought to all go out on this call . . . this girl sounds HOT."
