Pinterest is awesome. Do you not love it? (Since my last post, I've actually had a few people ask me what it is. Just click on the link if you don't know.) It's been so great having so many fabulous ideas right at my fingertips all just waiting to be stolen. I've been surprised to find that with all the things on there, my favorites have been things to do with/for my kids. And I've been even more surprised at how many we've actually done. I feel like less of a lame mom. The only problem(?) I've found with it all is hearing Reese ask, "So what are we doing tomorrow?"
Marshmallow shooters (dang fun even for Tom and me!)

(although some preferred to sit on the sidelines and chow down on all the ammo.)

Halloween pudding and oreo cups

Turkey pudding cups

Volcanoes (baking soda and food colored vinegar)

Reese: "Oooo, it's like it's interrupting!" Claire lasted 30 minutes (amazing for her) and Reese, a solid hour. Reese then asked to do it again the next day.

Next up, Tom's car. Sorry, I didn't mean to leave you with a please ask me all about it "Worst. Day. Ever." facebook type status (that was for you Marisa F. ;). The story's just not all that exciting. Tom gets to work pretty early (because of Seminary) so the roads were pretty icy from all the snow. He was on the street where he pulls into work and he slid and ran into a curb. Yes, just the curb, but it hit the wheel area just right and did some surprisingly expensive damage. It's currently deemed "undrivable". We did think about doing the minivan thing now instead of the original plan of waiting for the summer, but in the end we've decided to just pay the deductible to get it fixed and continue to save for a van. We want something pretty nice and fairly new that will last us a really long time, and our hope is to pay for it with cash. In the meantime, it's been pretty funny how shocked people have been that we're driving 3 kids around without a minivan. It may not seem ideal, but it's doable, people. Very doable. Before we had Everett, my friend Cynthia gave me the hot tip about Sunshine Kids Car Seats (now called Diono?). They are super narrow, super safe car seats, and I love them! They are a bit pricey, but I'm a bit crazy about safe car seats anyway (I'll spare you my rant about putting kids in boosters too early). I was shocked how easily they fit...not even squished and with several inches to spare by the doors. And since Reese can't unbuckle the bottom part yet it's made it easier for me to just turn around and quickly un-snap both girls and let them climb out. I should do a commercial for them.

And finally, in some super exciting news (for me!), I am blogging to you live from my brand new laptop. Yeah, yeah, yeah!!! Can you believe that in 8 years of marriage we have never bought a computer. Ever. We've just taken my dad's cast-offs. We got our current desktop from my dad maybe 5 years ago and I imagine he probably had it for about 2 years himself. I'm pretty sure that's about 173 in computer years. While I definitely don't feel like I need to have the latest in gadgets, I really am loving this. So much faster. Maybe I'll actually catch up with all my blogging now.

oh my word we bought a mini van because we couldn't find anything for 3 car seats! oh well I want four so it is a must sometime.
Rachel, you crack me up. I know exatly the facebook statuses you are referring to and they kill me. My other facebook pet peve is married people communicating via statuses.
You are such a fun mom! I need to take a page from your playbook and up my game.
So exciting about the new laptop and all the blog posts that are coming:). I've bought 3 laptops in the last 5 years and my current one is missing 5 keys and on it's last leg. I guess it's no wonder Steve is skeptial about buying me a Mac laptop. I'm really terrible about keeping them away from destructive little boys and not dropping them.
I think I need to check this pininterest thing out. I've heard several people talk about it now, but I'm afraid I would get too addicted to it!
And yeah for making three kids work without a minivan. We're still making our SUV work but have decided we'll need to take the leap into a minivan when #4 comes along (no, I am not announcing anything!!) We can't fit all three carseats in the same row with the SUV but we can in Jason's Camry!!
And I am happy to see someone else who feels so strongly about carseats! We still have Abby in a 5-point harness carseat, much to her dismay. She actually doesn't mind it too much but she is probably the one kindergartner in her class that isn't in a booster! She still hasn't hit the weight for it though (40 lbs) so I'll keep her in there as long as I can! Do you also keep kids rearfacing for longer than a year? The American Academy of Pediatrics actually recommends staying rear facing until a child is two which we try to follow. Look at me being all "car-seat Nazi" in your comments!
We did the three kids in a car thing for a year until Justin started residency. It was pretty annoying (we didn't know about your super cool narrow carseats) and they were jammed like sardines, but you do what you have to do. When you get your van you'll be blown away at all your new space!
Love Pinterest. My favorite things are the foods. I think I've gained about 5 'Pinterest' pounds since I've joined. Dangerous! You are one of my favorite people to follow. You have the best pins!
I cannot tell you how happy the shoot out made me! Totally made my day! And your post was so not that way....you at least said why it was the worst day ever ;). And you didn't actually put it on Facebook so you have my acceptance :). I'm glad it was just the car and not tom getting hurt but that totally stinks that it was undriveable. And good for you on saving! That's not easy to do! I am so with you on the booster thing. Kel is still in her booster and is not too happy since none of her friends have to anymore. And thats so awesome to have found skinnier seats.
We totally have 3 kids in a small car (Ford Escape to be exact) and they all fit. It's a little tight and my oldest complains about twice a month about getting his fingers squished when trying to buckle up, but it's (in your words) doable! We, too, are hoping for the minivan upgrade sometime next year.
Your crafts are so fun! The volcano thing looks super enjoyable. I may need to replicate. I have a Pinterest account but can't figure the dang thing out.
I agree with you about not putting kids in bigger car seats too early; we had Nadine facing backwards until for 21 months. Poor girl's legs were so squished; it was worth it for my peace of mind though.
Good to know about the seats. I'm sold on our Britax, but it's a hulking thing. A slender alternative is excellent. Plus, we're having no luck in the 2nd kid department, so maybe we won't need a minivan after all--more room in a sedan would be great. :)
I agree about Pinterest. So many fun things on there, especially for kids. And, we have three car seats in our car. We've done so successfully for 15 months in our Jetta and Mazda 3. A little tight when going camping or on road trips, but we've been making it last as long as we can and are now looking at other options. Sorry about the car, but I'm glad no injury occurred.
One of these days I'm actually going to make something I've seen on pinterest. Maybe when I have a house. I laughed at the earlier "pinterest pounds" comment though. I went looking for something to make for dinner the other night, and realized the only foods I pin are desserts!
As nice as the extra room in the van is, I really wish our CRV had lived for another year or two. The golden carseats were definitely worth the year they bought us of not having a car payment. That would be super awesome if you could get the van of your dreams and buy it with cash. I give you mega-props. It's funny to see all three carseats in your picture that are exactly the same as ours since I copied your infant seat. Parallel lives. :)
Well, my 1st grader is still in a booster with a back and my 4th grader is still in a booster you sit on. Sylvia is still in a 5-point harness and at her weight, probably will be for a very long time.
Lava interrupting. Too cute! I'll have to try that one for sure.
