The title is a little inside joke I have with myself....which I will now of course share. It just always makes me laugh when people blog about a room makeover and add "reveal" to the end of it (seen a lot on "link up parties" on those creative blogs). Like you were just waiting on pins and needles for me to reveal my playroom makeover.....the makeover you didn't even know was going on. I'm easily amused. Or maybe overly cynical. Moving on.
Tom and I have always disagreed a bit about what the function of the loft should be. While we will probably eventually turn it into another bedroom, I won out for the time being.
The Loft through the years (I feel like I need Babs' "The Way We Were" playing here)
It started out as Tom's ping pong table room
Wifey was mean and booted the ping pong table out the door once we started compiling too many toys. It looked super pretty. :( (The guest room mattress was also being stored in there once baby Claire came along.) And this was right after it was cleaned up nicely.
Okay, I will now end your suspense. The big REVEAL.....

I stole the overall idea of doing a scrabble wall from a model home I saw years ago. They painted the entire wall like a scrabble board though which I didn't love. I used a cricut to cut out the letters then mod-podged them onto these pre-cut boards I found. I wanted to cross the girls' names too, but the company discontinued the wood (I bought them like 3 years ago) and I can't find wood to cut that is even close to matching. I'm over it. I put scrapbook paper behind the letters to make it a bit cute-sier. That's a lot of information you probably didn't care about, but I've had a few people ask, so I figured I might as well share.
Oh how I love these Target bins! They are deceptively roomy! And while I once envisioned them being completely organized, I soon realized I would drive myself nuts trying to keep everything organized in a PLAYroom. So now HIDDEN is the name of the game.
This tv and table I found at a yard sale. I spray-painted the table and added scrapbook paper to the top. If you can't tell, mod-podge and scrapbook paper are two of my dearest friends.
I'm crazy, but I ended up re-doing this rule sign. I made it bigger and in the end neater. The original instructions kind of said to not worry about things being even. Turns out that uneven drives me nuts.
My favorite picture of the girls that Cynthia took blown up.
This last picture is of the unfinished area (the painting of the column and under the railing and some sort of decoration on the wall above the play kitchen), but I just wanted to show what I love most about the room....It's OPEN, but HIDDEN! I can be downstairs doing my own thing while the kids play, and still hear/kind of see them so I can run up to break up their fights. Yeah, the "rules" don't work. Maybe they need to learn to read first. The open-ness is also a large part of why we did the walls darker colors. Since it isn't its own closed off room, the colors needed to blend with the rest of my house (Decorating Duo, "Team Donohue" decided my paint colors). The chocolate color is on walls downstairs too (doesn't it sound sexier to call them "chocolate" instead of brown?).
My other favorite thing about the playroom is that it was done pretty cheaply with things I got from garage sales, craigslist, or donors who shall remain anonymous :) . I've definitely seen cuter playrooms, but I must say that even so, I absolutely love this room! It's our happy place! Thanks for joining me for my big reveal.

Cute, cute, CUTE!! Seriously, when are you going to come decorate my house for me? I have to ask - did you consult your scrabble game to find out how many points each letter is worth? :) And you crack me up that you redid the rules board. One of these days I will get to come see it in person. Someday . . .
I am AMAZED. Especially since I am in the middle of decorating our new house. (Reveal to come-haha). Can you come help me? That really is an awesome room.
It turned out so stinkin cute! You are craftier than you claim to be!
Cuter playrooms??? This is pretty darn cute!!! I am jealous!! What I wouldn't give for a playroom to hide all the toys. We only have 939 sqft in our house and every bit it used up! How I wish for an extra room.
Rachel, I love it! I bet your girls love being in there. Only thing is...what if a little boy comes along? You might have to add a little masculinity to the decor. ;) Ha ha, it really is too cute.
Rachel, I LOVE the room. How cute is the Scrabble wall? My Claire just came over and started pointing out all the things in your play room that she wants for her room. Apparently she loves it too!
way to go rachel! i'm so impressed. I love it. It's so cute. I love the scrabble tiles. Very creative. We have those same baskets in the cubbies in our playroom - which is actually just an extra bedroom in our house. The best part about that is if it's messy, i just close the door and i can't see the mess!!
I'm super impressed with your skillz. please come to my house and do a makeover on it!
Adorable! I am so envious of you cute, crafty, creative Koch's!! I love everything about your loft/ playroom. I was just telling Emily how frustrated I am that my kids won't even play in the playroom I made for them. UGH! Your house is so dang cute!!
I love it all the scrabble idea is my favorite!!!
Super, super cute! I've been watching a bunch of HGTV at the gym, and this blog is HGTV at its best.
I LOVE it Rachel. Your big "reveal" was totally worth the wait!! I can definitely see me copying your scrabble idea someday because I find it simply adorable. Look at you, crafty lady!!
Ahhhhh! I LOVE IT, RACHEL! You should seriously do this for a living for people like me who don't even know where to start with this kind of stuff! You are amazing. And that's so funny about the reveal thing. I never noticed how silly it really is until you mentioned that.
Totally AWESOME!! You did an AMAZING job!! LOVED the scrabble tiles!!
What a cute and fun play room!!
Oooooh, I love the room. It made me gasp and then turn jealous. I especially love all your modge-podging (I don't know what that is, but now I want to go to Joann and buy some for myself).
Very fun room. The colors are fantastic.
I love this! It is so practical AND pretty. I would love to have a loft bedroom or just a loft fullstop.
I especially love the scrabble tiles, the chocolate (oh how sexy) walls and the blue desk. Excellent reveal (I revealed the paving under my clothesline on my blog once... pathetic much?). Thanks for sharing.
Oh my goodness! It is so cute. You know what I want for Christmas for my play "closet", the rule board is adorable. Maybe you'll do it if I finish the picture wall by then.
When I first saw that scrabble board I just assumed that you'd gotten the idea on some show - I'm super impressed that you made it up! You'll definitely have people stealing that idea from you.
Thanks for the big head guys! You are all VERY kind with your comments. I hope I didn't offend anybody with the "reveal" thing. I always say obnoxious things then fret for the next couple days about possibly hurting feelings.
Marissa, don't you know that we're having all girls? Tom had a dream before we even started having kids that we had 3 little girls. So we should be good to go with the colors we have. :) But just in case Tom isn't a Seer, I'll just have another excuse to redecorate. A lot of the scrapbook paper things will be super easy to change out and the bins come in other colors. :)
You know some people have it and some people dont. When I buy a house I absolutely need you to come walk through and tell me how to decorate it. I have no style though I really appreciate others. :) LOVE the play room (and really all the pictures of your house).
Very cute. I like the reveal!!
Rachel, I am so impressed. Your rooms always turn out so, so, so cute. Want to come help me pick out things for my house? It's only taken me about 3 months to try and figure out a rug and curtains for A&S's room. I'm no where near covering the wall with cute, crafty things like you did.
Holy cow---you're hired!!! Can you come and do my playroom now????? I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! Seriously.
Oh, and yes, I was preggo when you were all here. I just didn't know it. I think I took the test that next week. I suspected I might possibly be--especially that one night when I got all teary when we were talking. Not my typical style :D. But it did explain why I was tired that Saturday after and slept in forever.
I LOVE it!!! We have those bins from Target, too. Ours are in pink, though, 'cause I'm pretty sure we're only having girls. :) And don't worry about the organizing. They get better as they grow. My girls are finally at the point that they get it and Sammy will tell Andy, "Daddy that's NOT where the Barbie's go!"
I have to ask... can I have your old "Playroom Rules" board? I loved it! I made the "Family Rules" for my SIL for Christmas (we do our exchange at the family reunion) and I am not sure I want to do another one. It was quite the work. Maybe you have a trick to make it easier... or maybe the paper you picked was easier to line up, but I really don't want to do another one for a long time! No matter how cute it turned out!
It looks awesome! Good job.
