The Garden

What up, what up! We have a garden.....thanks to Tom! Even with "Negative Nancy" (I was just worried about being overly ambitious for our first year) as his sidekick, we did get it finished. We don't have a ton of backyard space, but we most definitely maximized the space that we do have. Our friends, the Farnsworths, gave us some grow boxes last year (awesome!) and we put them to good use. We filled them with bio-compost and even set up a drip line with sprinklers....all by ourselves. We are just amazing ourselves lately. ;)

The planting begins...

(Please ignore our hideous grass that received no attention while we were focusing so much time on the garden.)

Tom wasn't planning on doing carrots, but for some reason Reese was fixated on the idea of growing them. Tom got carrot seeds just for her.

Reese ended up wanting to help plant just about everything and did a great job! Now almost every morning she asks, "Did our food grow yet?" Garden complete
A week and a half later....everything has sprouted except our cilantro.

What else is in our garden? So glad you asked.
Tomatoes, peppers, green beans, basil, sugar snap peas, beets, red potatoes, squash, zucchini, lettuce, spinach, watermelon, and radishes. We still have two squares left that we've been meaning to put strawberries in. We're keeping our fingers crossed for more good growth.

Wow your were ambitious!! Good luck on getting your garden to grow. It looks amazing so far and I love those planter boxes. We're doing a container garden again this year but hopefully next year we can do something more permanent now that we own our home!! I love gardens!!

Of course carrots - Curious George grew carrots in his garden - remember?

You got a lot in your garden! You'll have to let me know how the potatoes go. I've contemplated doing those. And lettuce too. I have a fear of not being able to wash lettuce thoroughly enough - same with broccoli. So let me know.

As for strawberries - I wouldn't bother with those this year. They ripen in June, so you've missed your window. Unless you want to plant them for next year. They're one of those plants, like raspberries, that you keep around year after year. We planted 20 plants this year, 10 died, and we've gotten all of 6 strawberries so far. A couple other ideas for your last two squares: cucumbers, cantalope, watermelon, or pumpkin - especially if you go to a nursery and buy starts - that'll save you a good month of growth!

I'm so jealous that you will be eating such yummy veggies out of your garden and I will have to get kind of yucky ones from the store! You guys look like garden pro's! LOVE IT!

Way to go, Rachel & Tom! I'm so impressed and can't wait to hear about the progress. I would love to get some great growing boxes just like yours--aahh, another project in limbo as they go. Great going on getting yours into action. Loved reading all your posts, and I'm so sorry about your water damage from the storm. :( I'm glad you had some great help though and hopefully things are on the mend now.
