Cheap, Tacky, or Just Plain Smart?

Well, I didn't have to twist Tom's arm very hard. We did end up going to The Cheesecake Factory last night for a very spontaneous and inexpensive date. It was great! We walked the 16th Street Mall, split a pizza, each had a slice of cheesecake and ended up spending a total of about $15 for the night. That's pretty good considering a slice of cheesecake alone is normally about $7. (And thanks to the sweetness of good friends, our babysitting was free.) Now those are my kind of dates.

Our yummy cheesecake

(Please excuse the dumb blurry camera phone pictures again.)

As if our bellies weren't full enough from last night, we got up this morning and went to Chik-Fil-A before Tom headed for work. I had coupons that expired today for 3 completely free breakfast meals.

2 of the 3 sleepy-heads ready for some chicken!

Pretty good for free wouldn't ya say?

I know I'm a nerd who gets easily excited about good/free deals, but it gives me such a high! And I have to address a similar topic that Tom and I find so funny. That is how people seem to think it's so tacky to take leftovers from restaurants home? I don't get it. Tom says that when his work takes him out to lunch or dinner (which is often) it's like it's bad form to ask for a box for your remaining food. I've often noticed the same thing when I go out. Why?!

I was just watching The View last week where they were talking about this very subject, and Whoopi Goldberg was appalled at the idea of leftovers...like it was so beneath her. Why is taking something you paid for considered tacky?! I can usually get an entire other meal out of what I don't eat when I'm out. I just don't get why you wouldn't try and save money...or really good food. And I don't think it's always a money thing, but rather a sensible thing.

Take my little bird eater for example. These were all her leftovers from this morning's breakfast. And you can bet your behind that this meal will be her dinner tonight. ;)

That is the one thing that I miss about Denver is CHEESE CAKE FACTORY!!! I love, love that place. I would have to agree with you... I love taking home left overs. I don't feel ashamed at all. I would have to say that sometimes I forget my food.

Thanks for making such a nice comment about my pictures. Your sister is so sweet, tell her THANKS!

I am sooo with you-- I always take leftovers home. They give you so much now a days-- I can hardly ever finish it. And my kids are like yours... Why would I waste good food?

Okay, so glad you were able to take advantage of the Cheesecake Factory yesterday...me and my sister were able to con my mom into bringing us a smidge of her piece of cheesecake she had for lunch yesterday- chocolate coconut heaven!! And I too think that you should take your leftovers...we always do!!

It never even occurred to me that taking leftovers from restaurants might be tacky...I guess that makes me REALLY tacky!

The thing about Whoopi is - well, her name is Whoopi. You know what I'm saying?

I bow to you...there is NOTHING better than free! I always take home leftovers too - I hate to see anything go to waste! And I am ashamed to admit that I have never been to the cheescake factory!

So sad I missed out on the Cheesecake Factory dealio. You should've posted sooner! Well at least you got some nummy cheesecake and somehow that makes me feel better.

I'm sorry I missed out on the deal too; wish I would have even read your blog earlier. They just opened a new Cheesecake Factory here so now there are three in the area! I had not heard that taking leftovers is tacky, but I figure if they give you enough food for two to three meals you should take advantage of it. I am either going to take home the leftovers or split a meal with someone- either way it saves me money and doesn't waste food.

I'm glad to hear that nobody's run across this. But seriously, 9 times out of 10 I'm the only one of my friends to ever take left-overs home. It takes all my will-power not to grab their food too. :) I'm also all about really getting my money's worth when I go somewhere like Olive Garden. I take home every last breadstick on the table and if I order all you can eat soup, salad, and breadsticks, I am positive to make sure they've brought a fresh batch of everything pretty close to when I'm full because then I want the rest boxed up and taken home. Tom laughs at me when I do this, but come on...I'm getting my money's worth!!! It's not like I'm a guy who's already had 10 helpings.

Rachel, you are so funny....I must admit I have been a really bad blog friend lately and was playing catch up with some people blogs and you really do love your deals!! Where do you find out about all these great deals?

Not only do we take home our leftovers, but we take coupons to the restaurants we go to, so I guess we are double tacky. When you don't have a lot of money to spend, you may as well get the most out of it.

Ok, this is something that I actually have a strong opinion about......I think it may be the dietitian in me. I think you should ALWAYS take home leftovers. I don't know of a restaurant that doesn't give you at least two times the amount of food that an actual serving/reasonable portion should be. I will a lot of times as for a box towards the beginning and put at least half of my meal in the box so I don't sit and graze while chatting. Plus, you are paying for it so who cares!?!? The other night I went to Ruth's Chris for a work dinner and they had these absolutely divine stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer. I wanted to take some home, but the waiters kept trying to take them off the table....so finally I was like "Ok, I am pregnant and there is a chance I may want to eat these later on in my meal, so would you PLEASE leave them here?!" Of course I just kept them and took them home, but I HATE when the waiter/waitress acts annoyed that you actualy think their food is good and may not want to overstuff yourself and take some home to enjoy later! So I am with you!!

I pick just plain smart on that one. You know me, very frugal.

I have never heard that taking leftovers is tacky. I guess I am tacky then, because we always take leftovers. It is lunch the next day. Crazy!!

I wish we had a Cheesecake Factory out here - that looked so yummy (and cost-effective)!

I always (or usually) split my meal in half at the beginning and ask for a to-go box right away. I figure that way, I eat less AND I have a yummy lunch for the following day. I don't think it's tacky. I think it's smart. Besides who is Whoopie Goldberg to talk about TACKY! I swear you'd see her picture if you looked the word up in the dictionary!!

I am all about taking my leftovers home. I don't like to eat all the food that they give me because the portions are huge! I am frugal, cheap whatever you want to call it, and I love it!

I didn't know taking home food was tacky. I guess I'm tacky then. I'm more about not being wasteful, and personally I think serving sizes should be a whole lot less, but whatever. I'm totally taking home what I don't eat. Otherwise you're just being wasteful. I bet Whoopi doesn't recycle either. :-

I miss Cheesecake Factory so much! You are my kind of girl getting a high off a good deal. I've found some GREAT blogs on using coupons and I have been getting some killer (like made money) deals. So of course I take left overs home!

I meant to comment on this post and got distracted. Anyway. Will knows he's in trouble if he goes somewhere fancy and doesn't bring me a doggie bag. I actually think he kind of feels bad because he goes out to eat all the time and doesn't even like eating out, and I never get to go and I LOVE eating out. So maybe he just swallows his pride, and maybe all of his coworkers think we are totally tacky, but he always brings me his leftovers.
