Wiping AND Going to School!

Early in the year (March?) we were driving somewhere as a family, and Reese busted out with, "When I turn 5 do I get to go to school ANNNND wipe my own poo?!" At the time, I couldn't honestly answer yes to either one of those so I responded with a laugh and a simple, "We'll see."

Tom and I had decided that even though she misses the school cut-off by just days, we weren't going to pay for her to go to preschool. In our minds it wasn't a NEED, although a definite WANT. A very pricy want. So we registered her for our school district's free preschool program and kept our fingers crossed. We were totally bummed to find out over the summer that she didn't get in. It was sometime around then that I did pass off my poo wiping rights to her though. One out of two wasn't bad!

This whole time we didn't really let her know that preschool had even been an option, but she still started to question why all her friends were going and she wasn't. Many of her friends are older and starting kindergarten and pretty much all the rest are in a preschool. She was getting really sad about it, which of course made me really sad.

But on Reese's 5th birthday (more about that later), I got an email saying that there was a spot open for her. Happy birthday to Reese!! I was so happy, I cried!

Her first official day was last Thursday and it couldn't have come soon enough. "I need to get some sleep because I have a really big day tomorrow," she told Tom as he tucked her in the night before. She got up bright and early, got herself dressed, brushed her teeth, then ran downstairs to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for breakfast....of course.

"Mom, I know what all the excitement is today!" she said when she first saw me. Excitement is right. I was (and am) so excited for her! She has been telling everyone she sees about how she's "going to real school, not preschool." Let's be honest, I'm pretty excited for myself too. 3 hours, 4 days a week, in the afternoon, with 2 napping children is pretty heavenly.

My little pumpkin all ready to go....

My other little pumpkin, Claire, was pretty excited too. (Until she realized later that she didn't get to stay.)

Doing "real homework".

See, 5 year old dreams really do come true!

Yay! I love it when things work out! She looks so big and grown up. Speaking of which, Claire is looking so grown-up too!

I admit, I am jealous of your new free time. What a blessing for you though! Sleep my dear, sleep well.

I love Reese's attitude too. Maybe it's a girl thing? Austin likes school, but he has zero interest in doing any homework and he doesn't gush over it like that. Glad she loves it.

Yeah for starting school!! I'm glad she's so excited about starting and I'm happy you get some "Rachel-time" in the afternoons too!

I laughed so hard at your post title. I have a friend who makes her girls certify to do things (wiping yourself is one of them), they have to do something 5 times supervised before they are allowed to go solo. I love it!

Yay for school. Claire looks so big too.

Wow turning 5 is the best!
She looks so gorgeous with her backpack and I am so glad she got in and you get some quiet time with your two little ones.

PS This post reminded me of when Riley first went to pre school ... Lucy cried and cried (and screamed) that she couldnt stay.

Also can Reese come over and teach Riley how to make his own breakfast? She's impressive.

Happy Birthday Reese! I'm so happy her wish came true on her special day. Knowing how well you do birthdays I'm sure she celebrated in style on her big day.

Big YEA! for both of you. I'm so happy for you that she got in. She will love it and that is too perfect that the other two nap when she is at school.

LOVE the backwards "S" in her name. Too cute! That girl is absolutely beautiful (when she smiles). I so miss them already and it's only been 5 days!
