Miss Bjorkman
It happened. Reese cut her own hair. It was only a matter of time, right? Isn't it sort of a rite of passage for a child? She told me she wanted to look "beautiful" like the girl in The Parent Trap (she had just watched it for the first time the day before). During the scene when the one "twin" cuts the other one's hair, I looked at Reese and said, "We never EVER cut our own hair. Only Randi!" This is a warning she has heard a thousand times before.
But she finally decided to test that warning. Sunday morning I saw her sitting under the kitchen table so I of course asked her what she was doing. She didn't answer and I dismissed it thinking she was coloring or something. A few minutes later she walked up to me holding a big clump of hair and said, "Look mom, it's beautiful!"
Luckily, when I looked closely, she had chopped it pretty low and sporadically that it honestly just looked like she had given herself a few more "layers". So shockingly, in the end, not much harm was done. And as far preventing a repeat offense...I'm pretty sure my initial scream of "NOOOOOOO" when I first saw the handful of hair (a scream that probably would have been more appropriate had an arm been cut off) seems to have been punishment enough.
Little Claire, on the other hand, served some hard time yesterday for her own repeat offense. I sat her in time-out for the first time. (This was the age we started it with Reese.) She wasn't the slightest bit phased. It actually seemed to have been more of a treat for her. She climbed up and sat there so willingly and was totally cracking me up so I of course had to snap a picture.
Oh, my little stinkers!

Oh Noooooooo! (Said half terrified and half laughing.) That is one of my biggest fears too. I thought I was safe with kid scissors, but apparently not! Glad that it's cover-up-able.
Oh, and I love that you smell like noodles. :)
So glad there wasn't much damage done!! That reminds me I should hide ALL the scissors today- even though I think Riley might be past that stage- you never know. Now that I think of it, Ridge would probably be the one to pull that kind of stunt on his sister:)
P.S. Your stinkers are pretty dang cute!
Ha ha! I think I remember you telling your dad you needed your bangs trimmed when you were little, and he told you to go get the scissors and do it yourself, and you did! Something like that, right? I used to cut my sister's dolls hair. My mom and sister were not very happy about that. And I agree - your stinkers are adorable.
I think you are both pretty lucky it was just a small bit of hair ;-)
We have "been there done that" and Lulu DID NOT look as cute as Miss Bjorkman after her hair cutting adventure.
I think I would've done the scream, too! Did you have to take her to Randi for a fixin'? Or is Reese a stylist in the making?
It could be a whole lot worse! My little sister cut her hair 7 times in 3 months... no joke! Not only did she cut her own hair she cut two of my little brothers' hair and (here's the kicker) my mom's hair!!! She was running back and forth from the bathroom grabbing clips and combs playing with my mom's hair and then handed my mom the clump of hair and said, "Here Mommy" like it wasn't even a big deal! I'm sure you can immagine the shreak my mom let out. She's 14 now and we still tease her she's going to be a hair stylist.
Ok, so what did Claire do to earn a timeout? I agree that this is a good age to start. I keep thinking Ruthie's at the right age for that too. But I think I'm a softie. We mostly punish Austin for being aggressive, I can't even remember what other rules to enforce!
Like Mother Like Daughter. Funny that Emily remembers the story. Claire looks so dang cute sitting there.
I remember when you put Reese on the time out chair, didn't she react the same way? Claire looks adorable. I just love this post. Reese's face is so classic. I am glad she only cut the bottom.
When Jordan cut his, it was so close to his head I ended up buzzing it off. Noah had no hair to cut off. Hailey, on the other hand, was my "NOOOO!" experience. I don't know if you remember me telling you how she gave herself a mullet. I didn't know if it was even repairable, but that's what ended becoming her curly bob today. I actually like her hair better now.
Reese's picture is absolutely priceless! So pouty and cute.
Yes, timeout seems to be almost a treat at that age. Like they're so big in the little person chair. That phase didn't last too long though.
BTW, I didn't know Dad said that to you! I remember you chopping your hair, but didn't know he recommended you do it yourself. Such a typical comment from dad.
This is my biggest fear. I did it as a kid. i'm pretty sure the day of having my kids cut their hair or their sibling hair is not far away. Your kids are so cute! I can't believe how big they are getting.
