Bras and Boots

Men, let the title be your warning!

I'll start first with boots just in case any men are still reading...and that's not at all scandalous. I am so in love with these shiny red boots we just got Reese the other day. They were 4 bucks on clearance and they match perfectly with the dress Grandma Marilyn gave her too. Nevermind the fact that she can't even walk in them. As any true fashion diva knows, shoes are not for comfort, but rather to look cute in. She can still boogie down in them though...what else do you need?

Poor girl was not in the mood for a photoshoot after a whole day with no nap because of 1:00 church.

Okay now onto the bras. I also am so in love with the new bras I got yesterday, and I just have to shout it out to the world! I woke up this morning and turned to Tom and said, "I'm so excited to put my bra on." When you find that special bra it just makes you so happy. I am a firm believer in getting a good bra that fits you right even if it costs a little more. My friends here laugh at me when I get on my soapbox about it, but ever since I learned what makes a good bra I've felt that it's my mission to get the rest of the world into the right fitting bra as well.

You've probably heard the statistics that 7 out of 10 women are wearing the wrong bra. (Don't you love how that sounds so dramatic like it's some deadly disease sweeping the nation?) So here are several tips for finding the right one. Of course I learned most of them from Oprah as she is my source of all (well most of my) knowledge, but I've also learned a little from professional bra fitters. Yes, there are certified bra fitters and you should find one.
  1. If your bra rides up your back at all it means it's too big. So go down a band size and up a cup size. Women get way to caught up on cup size and it really doesn't mean that much. Your bra should be level all around.
  2. If you have any back fat when wearing your bra that also means it's too big. You'd think the opposite, but not so. So same thing, down a band size and up a cup size.
  3. Buy the bra that fits on the first hooks. As they get older and the elastic stretches out you need to be able to hook it to the tighter hooks.
  4. When adjusting the straps there should be about a 1 inch give between the band and the top of your shoulder. No falling down straps or crazy indentions left on your shoulders.
  5. The middle front of your bra should be as flat against your body as possible.

These are all I can remember right now, but there are probably more. I think #1 & #2 are the most important.

Victoria's Secret ladies are not good bra fitters. I actually really really dislike their bras and think they're way over-priced for not even that great of quality. The first good ones I found were in New York at a store called Intimacy on Madison. My friend (was it you Marisa?) just recently told me that you can buy the same brands at Nordstrom. So I went yesterday and they are all certified bra fitters too. I'm sure there are great bras at other places too, but for my busty friends, Nordstrom brands are a great way to go! Another nice thing is that the right fitting bra can make you look smaller and thinner. And even another nice thing is that the Intimacy stores can convert your good bras into nursing if you need.

I have seriously felt like a brand new woman all day wearing this new bra. If you've made it through all this, congratulations! Now go out and get yourself the right bra.

You crack me up... I love reading your blog. I am so happy for you and your new bra!! I, however, do not share that same problem, but since you are the expert, do they make size -A?

I will have to go to Nordstroms soon! Thanks for the tips. Also, those boots really are adorable! They make me want to go out and find some for Katie.

I was just complaining to Kevin today that I need new bras. I'm glad you told me where to go. I was just going to go to Victoria's Secret. You helped me remember that every bra I had ever bought there was a piece of crap. Thanks for the advice. And the boots are very cute, too.

Really adorable boots! So true about the bra...

Nora, I'm so glad you asked. Yes, the bras range from size A-J. Yep, you read that right...J. Well, I know the "Intimacy" stores carry to that size anyway...just in case you know anyone. :)

Livet, thanks for commenting!

i'm all about a good bra. i think something you have to wear all day everyday, should be comfortable while flattering and let's be honest - it's not something we all look forward to putting on everyday, so i'm glad you found one you love. i'll have to check them out over there.

love the boots!

I was wondering what your secret was! As I watched your prize giveaway video I thought to myself, 'she is much too small and thin to look like Dolly Parton.' Now I know it's all about the bra sizing experts.
Size A???.....dang you Charlie!

smaller and thinner - are you kidding? How do I find a bra that makes me look larger and lustier???

Marisa said...

Amen to the bra love!!!! I did find that brand at Nordstroms and, holy cow, it changed my life :-). Seriously! It makes such a huge difference. I loved all the tips!

Reese's boots are to die for. I agree that fashion is not about being comfortable :-).

It's been years since I've heard a good bra story. Seems like it was a frequent topic back in the roommie days. I'm sure Tom loves getting all those stories now.

Rachel you are so funny! There is this whole side of you that I am just discovering...I love it! I love looking at your blog everyday (I think you would call me a blog-stalker) just to see what new things you've got going on! I also want to know how I change the background on my blog...I need something new and cute like yours!!

No need to watch Oprah, the news, or any other outside source of information for that matter. Now all you need is Rachel's blog and you have every useful tip, story, tidbit, etc. to make your life complete. Thanks for the tips, and AMEN to Vic. Sec. bras. Hate them.

You guys make me laugh! I love ALL your comments!

A couple things:

First, the Reese's give-away video issue. ADAM, no no, watching that video is what gave me the final shove to finally go buy a new bra so I could look smaller and thinner. I had not seen the bra fitting experts in like 2 years before 2 days ago. Yikes!

Second, I'm so glad so many of you agree with me about Victoria's Secret. Boo on them!

Cynthia, go to Victoria's Secret to look larger and lustier!

Marisa, I've said the same thing about those bras changing my life and I have another friend here that's said the same thing. Kari, we may need a testament!

Chelsea, I'm so glad you read my blog and I love reading yours! I've found that I get to learn a lot more about people through blogging...perhaps too much about me. :) I typed out instructions for changing your blog background that I can send to you if you want. Just let me know.

Chelsea said...

Yes! Please send me some instructions...I'm still new to this! My email is chelsea_kovach@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Hey - can I have the instructions too?? You may or may not have noticed that my blog is a tensy bit boring.

Ok, so I can't even believe the coincidence. I actually have been contemplating all week if I should write a post about bras!! I have been thinking about them a lot lately and so when I saw your post I loved it!! I actually have to admit that one of my favorite bras is from Vicky Seecs...as I call it. And the funny thing is, Russell acutally picked it out and gave it to me for some event that I can't remember. But overall I would agree with you about their bras. I am going to have to try Nordstrom for sure! Thanks for the tips!

Natalie, that's too funny that you were thinking of doing a bra post too. I say still do it. I would love another perspective and there can never be enough bra talk...just ask my old roommates. Oh, and just to clarify, these bras (the ones I got anyway) are definitely NOT pretty so they're not great for "events" as you call them. :) I would call them effective bras, but not neccesarily pretty. I think Vicki-Seecs (cute) is still good for cute ones. Come on, still do a post!

Thanks for the valuable bra tips. It really shouldn't be so hard!! I have a hard time shopping for bras with three boys in tow and when I am (once in a blue moon) by myself...bra shopping is the LAST thing I want to do.

Sarah said...

Rachel....Hey girl. I saw your link on Natalie's blog. I'm so glad I found you. Your little girl is so adorable! your post was great about the bras. I'm so in need of a new one! I'm pregnant with #3 and i'm definately going to Nordstrom in a few months when they go back to somewhat normal! lol.

Loved the pictures of Reese in her new boots and the video! She is so cute! I of course didn't read any of the info about the bras but Adrienne said it was very helpful and beneficial.

I feel so empowered to go out and buy myself a bra!!!! I totally agree with you though, a good bra can make you feel like a million bucks. It just stinks that we moms' bra size changes with each kid!

Reese is such a cutie! She has sure grown into such a little girl since we saw her last Christmas. Keep in touch!

Rachel - you've inspired me - I am going shopping tomorrow!! Can I ask - what bra did you find that you loved? I am sure every person will fit into a different bra but I would love to know where(Nordies?) and which one!! You are too cute! Also - TOTALLY you can post the poem about President Hinckley!! You can always take anything from my blog - no worries!! It's such a cute poem huh?

Thank you for posting about bras! But I need the name of the specific brand of bra that changed your life. Is it 'Intimacy'? Is there different models in the 'Intimacy' line? I struggle big time with bras. After I'm done nursing, I shrink to practically nothing. I've gone into Nordstrom for a bra fitting before, and even they had a tough time figuring out what size bra to wear when the measurement that is supposed to be larger than the rib measurement is smaller. I have hated bras my whole life and would love to feel comfortable in one.

I've been wearing Chantelle for the past few years, but for some reason Wacoal seemed to support me a little better this time. Maybe because I've had a baby now (even though I'm the same size as pre-baby).

I have always HATED bra shopping (like you Mindy) until I went down a band size. Actually Victoria's Secret people measured me to wear 2 band sizes bigger than I do now. If you're bra is not fitting right my main suggestion would be to try going down a band size or 2 and up a cup size or 2. Honestly, cup size really is not a big deal at all. On Oprah, there were these ladies that looked teeny that suddenly came out saying they were a 32 D or something. Just say who cares to cup size. And Nordstroms is great for carrying cup sizes that other places don't have. Just give it a shot. I just struggled and struggled to find it right until I went with these brands. Mindy, if none of this works my next suggestion would be to write Oprah! :)

Little girls need pink boots. Kessa has two pair of the same ones. Once she grew out of the first pair we had to buy her another size. Hopefully Target keeps them in stock.
